The Lotus-Effect® phenomenon was discovered by German botanist Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Barthlott, and developed by Sto for use in facade coatings.
A lotus leaf sheds water and dirt effortlessly in order to stay clean. This natural phenomenon is caused by a unique microstructure that prevents water from gripping the surface. Using biomimicry, Sto manufactured the StoLotusan range of Lotus-Effect® facade coatings with a near identical microstructure to that found on the lotus leaf.
The combined effect of the unique microstructure and carefully chosen components creates a superhydrophobic surface, and Sto is the first and only manufacturer of superhydrophobic coatings for facades.
Loose dirt will still accumulate on the surface during dry periods, but as soon as it rains then the dirt will be washed away, leaving a clean and dry facade.
Unsightly blue-green algae requires water and dirt to thrive and spread. By removing these two factors from the facade, Lotus-Effect® coatings provide the best natural defense against this common problem.
StoLotusan Lotus-Effect® coatings have a longer maintenance cycle than standard masonry renders and paints. By significantly reducing the need for regular cleaning and repainting, StoLotusan can end up saving you money.
